How to Use FlipperVolt
Download the software to your computer. The file you download is an "archive", which is a compressed collection of files. |
Decompress the archive on your computer. You will get a folder called FlipperVolt. It will contain several HTML files, a folder of JavaScripts, and a folder of images. All of these files must remain intact and untouched in this folder in order for FlipperVolt to work properly. |
Open the index.htm file in a browser. (We're working to make FlipperVolt function with most browsers and platforms; please check out the Platform/Browser Compatibility Chart on the Download page. Also, check out the Version Log for information on fixes and updates.) |
Displaying the index.htm page in your browser should cause the FlipperVolt Console to appear in the upper left corner of your screen. You can now close the original window (i.e., the index.htm page); keep the console window on your screen. |
Identify the URL (i.e., Web address) of an image you want to use as the first displayed. This can usually be done by one of these methods:- On the thumbnail image, click your right mouse button and tell the browser you want to save the address to the clipboard or similar area. This will store the address temporarily on your computer.
- OR ... click on the thumbnail image and when the full size image appears, copy the URL for the image from the address field on the top of your browser window.
You can try FlipperVolt right now with a demonstration page we've created. Visit the Fancy Dog Gallery for a page of 50 thumbnails. Grab an image address from one of the thumbnails and give FlipperVolt a test drive! |
For FlipperVolt to operate properly, you must be sure that:- the image address that you've copied ends in .gif or .jpg.
- the address includes a number for the image, like MVC0003X.jpg.
- the images in the series are in an order without large gaps between numbers
Paste the image address into the large field in the top portion of the console. The console will look something like this (it looks a little different on each platform/browser.) The areas marked by the letters are explained below.

Enter a URL in the large field. The URL must end in ".jpg" or ".gif" and include a number as part of the image address (e.g., MVC00003X.jpg). |
Click the ACCEPT URL button. This will change the number part of the image address to tildes (~). FlipperVolt does this to help it identify what numbers it should replace as it moves through the photos in the set. FlipperVolt will also take the number from the address you entered and punch that number into the "View #" field and display that starting picture. |
You can move backwards and forwards through the pictures using the nice red left- and right-arrows. As you move through the pictures, the number in the center field will update to show you the picture number. If you wish to jump to a specific picture, you can enter a number in this field and press the View # button. |
This is where the fun starts! If you don't care to use your mouse to move forward through the series of pictures, simply ensure that the cursor is in this little field and press your spacebar. Each depression of the spacebar will cause FlipperVolt to advance to the next picture! (If clicking here doesn't do anything, take your mouse and move your it over the little box and click inside, then try the spacebar again.) |
A slideshow! Now your hands are free. Drink some coffee and sit back. Pressing the START or STOP buttons here will control a slideshow of the pictures. (Please note: when you click STOP, it may take a second or two for the slideshow to actually stop.) |
You can select a delay time (in seconds) for the slideshow. You can change this delay while the slideshow is playing, too. If you find that it is taking a long time for images to load and the slideshow is skipping some images, you should increase the delay time. When the slideshow is operating, the blue orb will spin; it will stop when the slideshow is stopped. |
FlipperVolt pre-loads each image in the Preview window. You will see the picture appear here (as a 100-by-100 pixel image). Once the entire picture has been loaded by your browser, the full-size image will appear in a new window. |
Each version of FlipperVolt will be identified by a version number. The letter ("g" in this example) indicates the browser type you are using. (In this example the browser type is "Gecko".) We've created a console to work with many different browsers. Consult the Version Log to keep track of changes to FlipperVolt. Version 1 is a full-featured free version that includes advertisements. If you make a contribution, however, we'll provide you with an advertisement-free version and keep you updated on improved versions of FlipperVolt. |
